HISTORY
The Department of Business Administration is one of the pioneering academic sections under the College of Commerce. It initially offered the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) with majors in Banking and Finance and Marketing. However, the Department started to phase out these majors or field of specializations in the 1980s and offered a general curriculum in Business Administration with professional electives.
In the early 1990s, the Commission on Higher Education issued specific guidelines which called for the need to revise the curriculum. A number of elective subjects in the old curriculum became part of the required professional subjects while less-prominent electives were deleted.
The implementation of the Vertical Structure of the Graduate Business Program (Master of Business Administration) in the academic year 2000-2001 resulted in the fusion of the graduate and undergraduate programs under a single Department and College.
The following year, the offices of the Business Administration and the Graduate Business Administration were transferred to the newly-renovated office at the ground floor of the Archbishop Reyes Building, used formerly as the Graduate School Office. In the school year 2004-2005, the Graduate Business Administration moved to what is now called the Executive MBA Room. It was also at this time that Graduate Business Administration offered additional program—the Executive MBA. This would be followed by the offering of the MBA and E-MBA off-campus—first in USC history—in the next school year. Classes were held in industrial sites in what would be a fusion of theory and actual industry experience. It was also some kind of consortium between USC and the respective industry/institution aimed to reach out to clients by bringing school to where they work.
Declining enrolment in the Secretarial Administration Department in the academic year 2004-2005 led to its fusion with the Department of Business Administration. Today, the Department continues to provide excellent training for business professionals and executives.
