  DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN MANAGEMENT
   (Effective SY 2008 - 2009)

Highlights:

  1. Emphasis on applied research
  2. Tailored to part-time students
  3. International business exposure
  4. Specialization in Management

The Doctor of Philosophy in Management (PhD Management) program is designed to suit the needs of those who desire a PhD but cannot enroll in a full time doctoral program.  It emphasizes applied research especially in the field of management, and anticipates that the graduate will continue to expand the body of knowledge in the field, especially regarding the practice of management in Asia.  A course on ‘Teaching Business at Tertiary Level’ is provided for those who wish to continue in academe to form future business leaders.

The entire program consists of 57 units.  These include 9 units of preparation for research, 3 units of Dissertation Proposal and 18 units of Dissertation counseling/writing. The program follows a trimester system, 15 weeks per trimester. Each session runs for four hours in the first three weeks and three hours and thirty minutes for the rest; a total of 54 hours per course.  Classes are held on Saturdays.  A student is allowed to enroll in maximum of two courses (six units) in a trimester.

From the very outset the enrollee will be assigned an advisor in the area of his/her research interest (based on the research outline provided during the entrance examination).

  2. Graduates of non-business related programs should take 12 units of pre-requisites that are identified in the MBA program of SY 2008-2009 before enrolling in the PhD program. These include: Business Statistics, Accounting Principles, Macro-micro Economics and Computer Applications in Business.

  4. The applicant must submit a brief description of the research he/she expects to undertake at the dissertation stage.  This should include strong background knowledge and understanding of the topic and why it is important, and some basic recognition that the topic must address conceptual issues and not merely descriptive ones.  On the basis of this the applicant will be assigned a dissertation adviser.
  5. A general point average (GPA) of 85% in master’s degree.  Those below this average may be allowed to take the entrance exam upon the approval of the Dean. However, upon passing the entrance exam one may be admitted to the program on probationary status.  Such a student will be formally enrolled in the program upon securing a GPA of 2.0 in all subjects enrolled on probationary status.
